Solar Roads are the future power houses of the world. We all know that there are many million miles of roads built in the world, what if all those roads were able to harness sun’s energy?

Well, considering the massive network of roads and highways, a huge amount of power would be generated even if solar panels with just 15% efficiency are used. These roads could also have embedded LED lights in them which can provide navigation to the travelers and tell them about any road blockages due to accidents etc. These roads would also be able to re-route the entire traffic.

US Department of Energy recognized the huge potential in this concept and gave a $100,000 contract to a company named “Solar Roadways”. The firm will build a prototype 12 x 12 feet solar panel which could be fixed into roads.

If this experiment turns out to be successful then who knows one day we forget about Nuclear or any other energy and just rely on Solar Roads because they have a huge potential.

University of Florida chemists have pioneered a method to tease out promising molecular structures for capturing energy, a step that could speed the development of more efficient, cheaper solar cells.

“This gives us a new way of studying light-matter interactions,” said Valeria Kleiman, a UF associate professor of chemistry. “It enables us to study not just how the molecule reacts, but actually to change how it reacts, so we can test different energy transfer pathways and find the most efficient one.”

Kleiman is the principal investigator in the research featured in a paper set to appear Friday in the journal Science.

Her work focuses on molecules known as dendrimers whose many branching units make them good energy absorbers. The amount of energy the synthetic molecules can amass and transfer depends on which path the energy takes as it moves through the molecule. Kleiman and three co-authors are the first to gain control of this process in real time. The team demonstrated that it could use phased tailored laser pulses — light whose constituent colors travel at different speeds — to prompt the energy to travel down different paths.

“What we see is that we control where the energy goes by encoding different information in the excitation pulses,” Kleiman said.

Researchers who now test every new molecular structure for its energy storage and transfer efficiency may be able to use what Kleiman called a new spectroscopic tool to quickly identify the most promising structures for photovoltaic devices.

“Imagine you want to go from here to Miami, and the road is blocked somewhere,” she said. “With this process, we’re able to say, ‘Don’t take that road, follow another one instead.’”

The other authors of the Science paper are Daniel Kuroda, C.P. Singh and Zhonghua Peng. The research was supported by UF and the National Science Foundation.

Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.

“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density,” said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope battery can provide power density that is six orders of magnitude higher than chemical batteries.”

Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, currently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can pose concerns, Kwon said they are safe.

“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said. “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”

His innovation is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor. Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.

“The critical part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said. “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”

Kwon has been collaborating with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, and is working to build and test the battery at the facility. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that the battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair. They’ve also applied for a provisional patent.

Kwon’s research has been published in the Journal of Applied Physics Letters and Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry.

A German supplier of electronics and powertrain design to most of the major automakers for the last 25 years has just secured a patent that could be a game changer for electric vehicle adoption. Their technology would allow electric vehicles to be charged as they drive over any road embedded with a recessed wireless recharging strip, using electromagnetic induction.

Ingenieurgesellschaft Auto und Verkehr (IAV) says the technology will be available commercially within 3 years, is insensitive to weather conditions, and is not susceptible to mechanical wear.

As Wilfried Nitschke from IAV says, “The road is then the range extender.”

The concept of on-the-go roadway recharging for electric vehicles has been out there for a while. In August Nissan floated the idea along with closer-to-fruition ideas like wireless charging stands for the garage.

In fact, it is not untested technology. DARPA has long funded similar work at the PATH program at Berkeley; moving automated buses along set “tracks”, which is a relatively efficient way for buses to operate. Recently university researchers at the Korean Advanced Institute Of Science Technology have also been able to achieve 80% efficient transmission from the road up through a 1 cm gap, or 60% effective transmission when the space widened to 12 cm (nearly 5?) when they tested the technology to move a bus.

But until this year, little work has been done on using the concept to charge electric cars going at freeway speeds along regular roads, while enabling the electric vehicles to also move freely onto and off of the charging strip, as IAV has done. (German video)

IAV has achieved 90% efficient transmission for electric vehicle charging from roads using recessed electrical conductors that generate a magnetic field; activated only when the sensor detects that an electric car is over the induction field. Radio chips would identify individual electric vehicles for correct billing.

The key issue has been maintaining a set distance between the sensor under the vehicle and the roadway. To solve that, the vehicle sensor must use active suspension and to also utilize optical electronic controls to maintain a consistent distance between the road and the sensor.

IMEC, one of the leading European research centers in photovoltaics, and BP Solar, a leading energy company, demonstrated a 18% conversion efficiency for silicon solar cells made of BP Solar’s newly developed Mono2TM silicon. By combining IMEC’s advanced processing techniques with BP Solar’s high-quality low-cost substrates, the companies demonstrated that Mono2 has a good potential to become a new base material for low-cost highly-efficient solar cells.

low cost solar cell

low cost solar cell

BP Solar’s Mono2 production process delivers a promising new wafer platform for solar cells with the potential to become a low-cost alternative to the more expensive Czochralski silicon substrates because it combines extremely low defect densities and high conversion efficiencies with production costs that are comparable to the costs of traditional multicrystalline substrates. The production of Mono2 involves a proprietary growth nucleation process for the casting of ingots used to produce single crystal bricks and wafers whereby preferred crystallographic orientations can be achieved. This feature allows further improvement in cell efficiencies. BP Solar’s Mono2 was developed with support of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Technologies Pathways Partnership.

IMEC’s cell production process is feasible as an industrial production process as it only adds three processing steps to the standard industrially applied process of full aluminum back surface field.

IMEC’s solar cells are 130?m thick and cover an area of 156mmx156mm. Using IMEC’s advanced processes such as dielectric passivation and a localized back surface field, a conversion efficiency of 18% for the new low-cost Mono2 silicon solar cells, which is in the range of the current commercial solar cells, has been demonstrated with a dramatic reduction in cell thickness.

Jef Poortmans, Program Director Photovoltaics said, “IMEC’s photovoltaic research aims towards a sharp reduction in production cost and at the same time an increase of the efficiency of crystalline silicon solar cells. Our partners can leverage our advanced processing techniques, to create high-efficiency low-cost solar cells based on their proprietary high-quality materials and knowhow.”

Eric Daniels, BP Solar’s vice president, global technology said “BP Solar is working to leverage such key technology developments to further reduce the cost of PV electricity. Working with R&D centers such as IMEC and key customers, we are commercializing this technology and seek to provide a better platform for the current and next generation solar cells. This collaboration with IMEC represents significant progress towards that goal.”

By 2011 the US Army’s Space & Missile Defense Command has plans to deploy a spy ship, which will be unmanned over Afghanistan. While this is a controversial move in itself, some eco-enthusiasts are applauding the consideration to model the aircraft after an experimental hybrid airship which took flight on a number of occasions in 2006.

hybrid airship

hybrid airship

The autonomous airship, which will be based on a model created by Lockheed Martin is a Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) called the P-791, will be 250 feet in length, double the size of the original prototype and will have the capability of remaining buoyant in space, while unmanned for up to 3 weeks and 20,000 feet. The cockpit of the airship will be 40 feet long, 15 feet wide and 6 to 8 feet tall and will likely a contain a ground moving target indication radar, a wide motion imagery sensor and other intelligence devices; the tools of the trade necessary for any covert surveillance operation.

A contract will be awarded to begin development of the aircraft this year, which will model the original LEMV which was classified as hybrid as 80% of its ability to remain airborne is based strictly on buoyancy. The remaining 20% of its power is generated by six thrusters which are electrically powered by a central turbo generator, giving the aircraft the propulsion it needs to get to 20,000 feet.

If spy ships can go green, there surely has to be hope for the rest of the world!

Last week, France unveiled plans to go electric, making it both possible and convenient for commuters in the nation to purchase and engage in the regular use of hybrid vehicles. To date, the lack of charging stations in France has made it difficult for drivers to adopt the more eco-friendly method of transportation, and France is ready to change that, in turn reducing their carbon footprint.

nationwide charging station network will be setup at a cost of approximately 1.5 billion Euro or $2.2 billion USD. The funding will come from a combination of a state loan totalling 900 million Euro that’s set to launch next year using taxpayer money, and the rest of the financial burden will fall to business owners.

The installation of charging stations will be mandatory and must be available in all office parking lots for commuters as well as in apartment building parking lots. France has set the timeline of 2015 for installation in offices and apartment building owners will have until 2012 to help convert drivers to a greener way of life. The timeline for these charging stations couldn’t come at a better time for the nation either since according to Environment Minister Jean-Louis Borloo fleet operators from the public and private sectors have pledged to purchase 50,000 electric vehicles by 2015, creating an estimated total of 100,000 eco-friendly vehicles that will be driving on the roads of France by that date.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Europe will this week launch a campaign to triple funding for energy research to 8 billion euros ($11.7 billion) a year in a technology race with Japan and the United States, a draft document shows.

Solar power should get 16 billion euros over the next decade and up to 30 energy-sipping “Smart Cities” should be built with the backing of around 11 billion euros, added the report by the European Union’s executive, the European Commission.

In total, at least 50 billion euros of additional funding is seen over the next 10 years to ensure a wide range of technology emerges to help the EU meet its goal of cutting greenhouse gases by 80 percent by 2050.

“We need to stimulate our best brains to push back the frontiers of science in materials, in chemistry and physics, in nanotechnology and biotechnology, to find new and better ways of producing and consuming energy,” says the draft obtained by Reuters ahead of the launch on Wednesday.

“We can not sit back and wait for such potentially game changing breakthroughs to emerge from laboratories and make the often long and arduous journey to market,” it adds.

The report looks at how much funding is needed, rather than how businesses and the EU’s 27 member countries would find the money as they emerge from the biggest downturn since the second world war.

But earlier Commission proposals for funding energy projects, such as the 4 billion euros “European Economic Recovery Plan” have made swift progress this year and are now in the later stages of debate by EU ambassadors.

Companies ranging from Germany’s E.ON to Spain’s Gamesa look set to benefit.

Wind energy research should get 6 billion euros over the next decade, nuclear research should get 7 billion euros and energy from biomass and other waste 9 billion.

There should also be 13 billion euros for innovative “carbon capture and storage” technology to trap carbon dioxide from power stations and bury it underground.

JOB CREATION

The money, from both public and private sources, will be backed with a major push to coordinate research and reverse a tradition of duplication and wasted academic effort among the EU’s 27 nations.

The strategy is aimed at slashing output of gases blamed for climate change, but it also is to wean the EU off its dependency on costly oil and gas for 80 percent of its energy needs.

“We know that low-carbon technology will one day become cost-competitive with fossil fuels, and the question then is whether the EU will be an importer or an exporter of that technology,” said an EU official. “We have to be in pole position.”

The switch to green energy is also expected to create significant employment. The report sees 250,000 jobs created over the next decade as wind power shifts its focus to the seas, where wind is more plentiful and the public less critical.

Over 200,000 skilled jobs could be created in the solar energy sector, and the same number in bioenergy plants to generate energy from burning household and agricultural waste.

The so-called Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) also envisions significant investment in hi-tech areas that are too risky to attract traditional sources of research funding.

“Motor fuels direct from sunlight, digital light sources that last for decades, batteries that store electricity at 10 times the current density — these are some of the technologies of the future,” says the draft.

“To master them we have to explore new levels of complexity in the physical and chemical phenomena that control how materials perform and interact,” it adds.

The demise of retail giant Filene’s Basement may have a positive effect on proponents of vertical urban farming and algae biofuels alike. Since 2007, the developers of a Filene’s site in downtown Boston have been unable to find funding to move the project forward. But now Höweler + Yoon Architecture and their partner Squared have put forth a proposal to erect a temporary vertical, modular, algae bioreactor high-rise in its place.

Called the Eco-Pod (pdf), the project leaders intend it to immediately stimulate “the economy and the ecology” of downtown Boston simultaneously. Eco-pod is a temporary modular structure made of individual pods that can be disassembled if and when the Filene’s project actually gets funded. According to the developers of Eco-Pod, each pod will produce biofuel and act as an incubator for scientists and companies to do research on growing algae and producing biofuel. The structure will also have open common areas to form a network of public parks and gardens.

Taking advantage of the fact that algae can be grown vertically on non-arable land, the Eco-Pod expands on the idea of urban vertical farming and takes it one step further with a vision to make fuel locally in an urban setting. By placing the structure in the middle of a city, the developers hope to stimulate public interest in algae biofuels as well as create an interaction between the public and researchers.

The Eco-Pod’s modules can be reconfigured as necessary to meet the changing demands of the structure by means of a “robotic armature powered by the algae biofuel.” If the Filene’s project ever takes off, the modules can be taken down by the robotic arm and redistributed to other parts of the city to infill other empty sites.

And now for a little dose of reality: As with most projects of this type, this one seems designed by people who have little practical experience with the needs of scientists and the viability and profitability of making algae biofuels with current technology. While I appreciate the creativity of the venture, I think it is a bit too pie-in-the-sky to ever see the light of day. Sure it could be done, but it would likely be a money-losing venture—far from the economic stimulus that the developers envision.

Nowadays, solar energy is the most important alternative energy source on the planet. Solar centrals will be the main electricity suppliers in the near future. The perfect areas, where these solar centrals would work at maximum capacity are deserts. In deserts the intensity of solar radiation during the day is very high and solar systems would reach maximum efficiency.

One of the most popular deserts, where are planned already several solar projects, is Sahara desert. Europe, Middle East and North Africa could be supplied with electricity produced in Sahara desert. The energy needs could be covered for a period of 40 years, shows a recent study. The most important companies in the world (20 companies) want to invest in the technology needed to produce electricity in Sahara desert. All projects made by these companies will be presented at the end of this year.

Researchers said that solar energy produced in Sahara desert in 6 hours is equal to the energy consumed on the entire planet in a year. These studies have led people to believe that the entire planet could receive electricity from Sahara. This type of project is very difficult to achieve, but with time and advancement in technology, in several years this large project could be a real thing. The costs for such a project are very high, about 400 billion euros, equivalent to building 10 advanced nuclear centrals. In 10 years this large amount of money would be invested and transformed into an inexhaustible energy source.

The electricity consumption on the entire planet is very big today. Researchers estimated that in 2050, world population will be 10 billion people, and to provide energy for their needs it would be necessary to produce energy, three similar planets. For these reasons the 20 companies (Desertec Organization) decided that until 2050 to produce 100GW of solar energy for Europe, Middle East and North Africa. This electricity produced will be transported on high voltage lines to electrical networks from every country.

These solar centrals could create a lot of work places (a 250MW central need services of 1000 workers and engineers in only 2 years). In this way, many countries from Middle East and many poorer countries, could create a new economy, providing jobs and stopping emigration. The risks in building such a big central are very high. The only factor that could damage the central is the sand. This sand could cover the solar system active surfaces and the central efficiency could decrease. For cleaning these surfaces the central need many employees to take care of these problems, and this would involve also a large amount of money. Desertec project includes also producing energy at night by installing a large number of Solar-Thermal centrals. These centrals are different from solar centrals, because are able to store solar heat at night or in cloudy days.
