When we look closely at human history we can easily conclude that locomotion is one of the most primordial needs. But our current lifestyle does not allow us with much of the movements. We need to move more often. But it is also true that we live in fitness conscious times. Going to a gymnasium and working out has become a health statement. But till now many of us have not delved deep into what happens in a gymnasium and how can we utilize events happening in gym for better purposes. If we look carefully every member of a gym in a particular time slot is performing some controlled and repetitive motion be it lifting weight or running on a treadmill or doing crunches. What can we do with all these motions?

Architect Mitchell Joachim, along with Douglas Joachim, a personal trainer, envisioned an idea that might redefine the perception of a gymnasium. When people exercise all the energy created by motion is wasted and it disappears into nothingness. If we can channelize all this kinetic energy into something meaningful we can have a floating River Gym, a kind of soft floating micro-island. It will utilize all the energy made by gym goers and convert it into usable electric energy stored in on-board batteries. This ground-breaking gym will not only endow us with a stimulating view to look upon, but will also provide increased transportation as well as a unique way to purify water while working out.

“Our concept encapsulates a new typology for the contemporary urban gym. It is intended to challenge our innate proprioceptive and multi-planer locomotive abilities while synchronously altering the surroundings. The River Gym will fulfill one of the major contemporary fitness goals of ‘functional training’,” Mitchell and Douglas Joachim elaborate.

When you go to a regular gym all you can enjoy is the sweaty images of you and fellow gym goers or a TV set or some music tracks going in loops. But here in River Gym you can observe the waves playing on the sea bed or some sea creatures taking into account what is happening in the river capsule. Why you have to subject yourself to same good old TV or music? While exercising, you can volunteer to transport some passengers to their destination too. That will combine exercising with some altruism.

This River Gym will offer all the facility a usual gym offers such as lockers, a reception desk and health food kiosks. All this would be housed in multiple points at the edges of each river body. Mitchell and Douglas put forth their views, “By continuing to provide vital health amenities, the River Gym can leave the realm of the glass box and become a useful multi-planar kinetic space.”

It is stated that they are dealing with concepts to harvest wasted human energy but utilizing a knee brace that captures energy from walking and uses it to produce electricity, or a system capable of channeling kinetic energy into electric power is awesome. These necessary devices are being developed by the Idaho based company Motion 2 Energy.

You’ve heard about flower power. What about tree power? It turns out that it’s there, in small but measurable quantities. There’s enough power in trees for University of Washington researchers to run an electronic circuit, according to results to be published in an upcoming issue of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Transactions on Nanotechnology.

“As far as we know this is the first peer-reviewed paper of someone powering something entirely by sticking electrodes into a tree,” said co-author Babak Parviz, a UW associate professor of electrical engineering.

A study last year from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that plants generate a voltage of up to 200 millivolts when one electrode is placed in a plant and the other in the surrounding soil. Those researchers have since started a company developing forest sensors that exploit this new power source.

The UW team sought to further academic research in the field of tree power by building circuits to run off that energy. They successfully ran a circuit solely off tree power for the first time.

Co-author Carlton Himes, a UW undergraduate student, spent last summer exploring likely sites. Hooking nails to trees and connecting a voltmeter, he found that bigleaf maples, common on the UW campus, generate a steady voltage of up to a few hundred millivolts.

The UW team next built a device that could run on the available power. Co-author Brian Otis, a UW assistant professor of electrical engineering, led the development of a boost converter, a device that takes a low incoming voltage and stores it to produce a greater output. His team’s custom boost converter works for input voltages of as little as 20 millivolts (a millivolt is one-thousandth of a volt), an input voltage lower than any existing such device. It produces an output voltage of 1.1 volts, enough to run low-power sensors.

The UW circuit is built from parts measuring 130 nanometers and it consumes on average just 10 nanowatts of power during operation (a nanowatt is one billionth of a watt).

“Normal electronics are not going to run on the types of voltages and currents that we get out of a tree. But the nanoscale is not just in size, but also in the energy and power consumption,” Parviz said.

“As new generations of technology come online,” he added, “I think it’s warranted to look back at what’s doable or what’s not doable in terms of a power source.”

Despite using special low-power devices, the boost converter and other electronics would spend most of their time in sleep mode in order to conserve energy, creating a complication.

“If everything goes to sleep, the system will never wake up,” Otis said.

To solve this problem Otis’ team built a clock that runs continuously on 1 nanowatt, about a thousandth the power required to run a wristwatch, and when turned on operates at 350 millivolts, about a quarter the voltage in an AA battery. The low-power clock produces an electrical pulse once every few seconds, allowing a periodic wakeup of the system.

The tree-power phenomenon is different from the popular potato or lemon experiment, in which two different metals react with the food to create an electric potential difference that causes a current to flow.

“We specifically didn’t want to confuse this effect with the potato effect, so we used the same metal for both electrodes,” Parviz said.

Tree power is unlikely to replace solar power for most applications, Parviz admits. But the system could provide a low-cost option for powering tree sensors that might be used to detect environmental conditions or forest fires. The electronic output could also be used to gauge a tree’s health.

“It’s not exactly established where these voltages come from. But there seems to be some signaling in trees, similar to what happens in the human body but with slower speed,” Parviz said. “I’m interested in applying our results as a way of investigating what the tree is doing. When you go to the doctor, the first thing that they measure is your pulse. We don’t really have something similar for trees.”

Electricity is the ultimate portable fuel, so running a car on electricity opens a world of possibilities in terms of harvesting and using sustainable energy while on the go.  Thermoelectric innovator Amerigon Incorporated has one especially interesting approach: capture the waste energy from the car’s engine exhaust and recycle it into electric power.  Through its BSST subsidiary and with $1.1 million in backing from the U.S Department of Energy, Amerigon is entering the fifth phase of the project.  Completion is targeted for March 31, 2010, and then look out, world.

Amerigon, BSST and Thermoelectric Energy

Amerigon’s BSST subsidiary has already applied thermoelectric recovery principles to heating and cooling systems.  It’s a logical choice for the project, having developed the highest-efficiency thermoelectric technology achieved so far.  The program kicked off in 2005 with a team including Visteon Corporation, BMW, UC Santa Cruz, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the California Institute of Technology’s Jet propulsion Laboratory.  Ford joined the project after analysis and concept phases established a fuel savings of up to 12% in simulations, and the thermoelectric system was bench-tested in the lab using hot gas instead of actual exhaust.  Phase 4, which is drawing to a close, involves testing the system on a BMW six-cylinder engine.

Cars as Energy Harvesters, and Energy Generators

The new technology promises a sea change in the way we conceive of cars as energy users – and producers.  For example, an electric car that harvests solar energy could also incorporate BSST’s thermoelectric system, while generating kinetic energy as it passes over a roadway – and using available wind as an additional power source.  In the not too distant future, cars that run only on fossil fuels will be just that – fossils.

Electricity is the ultimate portable fuel, so running a car on electricity opens a world of possibilities in terms of harvesting and using sustainable energy while on the go.  Thermoelectric innovator Amerigon Incorporated has one especially interesting approach: capture the waste energy from the car’s engine exhaust and recycle it into electric power.  Through its BSST subsidiary and with $1.1 million in backing from the U.S Department of Energy, Amerigon is entering the fifth phase of the project.  Completion is targeted for March 31, 2010, and then look out, world.

Amerigon, BSST and Thermoelectric Energy

Amerigon’s BSST subsidiary has already applied thermoelectric recovery principles to heating and cooling systems.  It’s a logical choice for the project, having developed the highest-efficiency thermoelectric technology achieved so far.  The program kicked off in 2005 with a team including Visteon Corporation, BMW, UC Santa Cruz, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the California Institute of Technology’s Jet propulsion Laboratory.  Ford joined the project after analysis and concept phases established a fuel savings of up to 12% in simulations, and the thermoelectric system was bench-tested in the lab using hot gas instead of actual exhaust.  Phase 4, which is drawing to a close, involves testing the system on a BMW six-cylinder engine.

Cars as Energy Harvesters, and Energy Generators

The new technology promises a sea change in the way we conceive of cars as energy users – and producers.  For example, an electric car that harvests solar energy could also incorporate BSST’s thermoelectric system, while generating kinetic energy as it passes over a roadway – and using available wind as an additional power source.  In the not too distant future, cars that run only on fossil fuels will be just that – fossils.

As PG&E ramps up renewable power in response to the California RPS requirement that it get 33% of its electricity from renewables by 2020; it has been exploring ways to add that much renewable power to the grid while smoothing out the ups and downs of wind energy, which often peaks at night.

The utility needs a way to turn sometimes-too-much wind into anytime-always-there electricity.

The solution? Simple tech. Underground compressed air.

With compressed air energy storage; air is compressed and then pumped in natural underground reservoirs. The air is released later and converted into electricity. With enough storage, even fickle wind could actually supply base-load power.

So PG&E has applied for DOE smart grid stimulus funding under The Recovery Act; to build a compressed air energy storage project with output capacity of 300 megawatts. They are applying for $25 million.

By comparison, building a plant to burn fossil fuels would cost around $850 million for the same 300 megawatts of fossil energy.

PG&E estimates their $350 million project will take five years to design, permit and build. Wind turbines would compress the air during off-peak times and then draw from the reservoir during peak times. Shifting the energy from off-peak to peak times, such as the middle of the day, makes it more valuable as utilities pay far more for peak energy.

If granted, the utility would use the smart-grid stimulus funds available in The Recovery Act in order to build enough storage to hold and release as much electricity as a medium sized base-load power plant for about 10 hours each time.

PG&E would pump compressed air into an underground reservoir, using mostly wind energy to power the generators, and some natural gas – about a third as much as a gas-fired plant of that capacity.

Another proposal for reheating the air withdrawn from storage, is to use biomass-derived fuels produced locally from energy crops in remote, wind-rich areas.

Compressed air energy storage or CAES has orders of magnitude more capacity than typical utility batteries and appears to be the most cost-effective form of energy storage according to technical experts at the Electric Power Research Institute and a massive study of CAES at Princeton University which concluded:

“CAES appears to have many of the characteristics necessary to transform wind into a mainstay of global electricity generation. The storage of energy through air compression may enable wind to meet a large fraction of the world’s electricity needs competitively in a carbon constrained world.”

The concept has been proven. The Alabama Electric Cooperative in Alabama now has 20 years of experience with a 100 megawatt CAES system. A major new project is being backed by the DOE in Iowa, which gets 15% of its electricity from wind.

So just through time-shifting energy delivery; storage can make it possible for wind to essentially supply base-load power for far less money than building more fossil fueled power stations.  What this amounts to is adding 300 megawatts of new power to the grid.

Hmm… $25 million for 300 megawatts of carbon-free future-friendly time-shifted wind power or $850 million for 300 dirty megawatts of a dwindling resource?

I’m betting that that very smart Steven Chu of the DOE is going to grant this $25 million to PG&E…

As PG&E ramps up renewable power in response to the California RPS requirement that it get 33% of its electricity from renewables by 2020; it has been exploring ways to add that much renewable power to the grid while smoothing out the ups and downs of wind energy, which often peaks at night.

The utility needs a way to turn sometimes-too-much wind into anytime-always-there electricity.

The solution? Simple tech. Underground compressed air.

With compressed air energy storage; air is compressed and then pumped in natural underground reservoirs. The air is released later and converted into electricity. With enough storage, even fickle wind could actually supply base-load power.

So PG&E has applied for DOE smart grid stimulus funding under The Recovery Act; to build a compressed air energy storage project with output capacity of 300 megawatts. They are applying for $25 million.

By comparison, building a plant to burn fossil fuels would cost around $850 million for the same 300 megawatts of fossil energy.

PG&E estimates their $350 million project will take five years to design, permit and build. Wind turbines would compress the air during off-peak times and then draw from the reservoir during peak times. Shifting the energy from off-peak to peak times, such as the middle of the day, makes it more valuable as utilities pay far more for peak energy.

If granted, the utility would use the smart-grid stimulus funds available in The Recovery Act in order to build enough storage to hold and release as much electricity as a medium sized base-load power plant for about 10 hours each time.

PG&E would pump compressed air into an underground reservoir, using mostly wind energy to power the generators, and some natural gas – about a third as much as a gas-fired plant of that capacity.

Another proposal for reheating the air withdrawn from storage, is to use biomass-derived fuels produced locally from energy crops in remote, wind-rich areas.

Compressed air energy storage or CAES has orders of magnitude more capacity than typical utility batteries and appears to be the most cost-effective form of energy storage according to technical experts at the Electric Power Research Institute and a massive study of CAES at Princeton University which concluded:

“CAES appears to have many of the characteristics necessary to transform wind into a mainstay of global electricity generation. The storage of energy through air compression may enable wind to meet a large fraction of the world’s electricity needs competitively in a carbon constrained world.”

The concept has been proven. The Alabama Electric Cooperative in Alabama now has 20 years of experience with a 100 megawatt CAES system. A major new project is being backed by the DOE in Iowa, which gets 15% of its electricity from wind.

So just through time-shifting energy delivery; storage can make it possible for wind to essentially supply base-load power for far less money than building more fossil fueled power stations.  What this amounts to is adding 300 megawatts of new power to the grid.

Hmm… $25 million for 300 megawatts of carbon-free future-friendly time-shifted wind power or $850 million for 300 dirty megawatts of a dwindling resource?

I’m betting that that very smart Steven Chu of the DOE is going to grant this $25 million to PG&E…

Asphalt is ugly and flaky, and requires constant supervision. Snow and road repair can slow down traffic worse than an ugly accident, and the resources that go into building maintaining high-use highways are intimidating to consider.

But there may be another way. A radical intelligent highway design utilizing solar panels, LED lighting, and heating elements has been awarded funding by the Department of Transportation to the tune of $100,000. Will the Solar Highway soon replace asphalt, and how will we all adapt to driving on glass?

The Department of Transportation awarded the $100,000 to Solar Roadways. This money is to build a 12? x 12? protoype road section, the average width of a highway lane. Solar Roadways creator Scott Brushaw proposes that his prototype will be able to capture and produce energy from the sun. This energy would then be used to light the roadways, “paint” lines, and flash warnings to motorists about upcoming hazards like an accident or daring animal, as well as providing power to America’s home and businesses.

But that’s not all. They also propose that, if every inch of America’s 25,000 miles of roadway were replaced with their idea-turned-fact, America would make three times as much energy as it used back in 2006. One 4-lane wide stretch of Solar Highway would theoretically make enough energy to power 500 homes. There would be no need for power plants, transformers, power lines, etc. The energy would flow where it was needed, straight from street to home. Furthermore, heating elements would keep the roadways clear of snow and ice, eliminating the need for plowing services and pothole fixes.

The prototypes will be made in three levels. The bottom layer contains the electronics and data needed to make the system work. On top of that are the solar cells LEDs, and sensors that detect any road hazards ahead. The top level is going to be made from something clear, likely bulletproof glass. But wait a second, how are you going to make a smooth clear surface that has the same traction as asphalt, and can put up with constant heavy loads from trucks and traffic?

Another property that concerns me is that complicated roadway will have a supposed lifetime of 21 years, three times more than asphalt. Technology moves fast, but this sounds a little too good to be true. Did I mention it is supposed to cost just $48 per-square foot as well?

Take a look at the Numbers section of their website. At the very least, they make a good argument for their prototype, and I wish them best of luck. Just don’t turn my streets into hockey rinks.

Asphalt is ugly and flaky, and requires constant supervision. Snow and road repair can slow down traffic worse than an ugly accident, and the resources that go into building maintaining high-use highways are intimidating to consider.

But there may be another way. A radical intelligent highway design utilizing solar panels, LED lighting, and heating elements has been awarded funding by the Department of Transportation to the tune of $100,000. Will the Solar Highway soon replace asphalt, and how will we all adapt to driving on glass?

The Department of Transportation awarded the $100,000 to Solar Roadways. This money is to build a 12? x 12? protoype road section, the average width of a highway lane. Solar Roadways creator Scott Brushaw proposes that his prototype will be able to capture and produce energy from the sun. This energy would then be used to light the roadways, “paint” lines, and flash warnings to motorists about upcoming hazards like an accident or daring animal, as well as providing power to America’s home and businesses.

But that’s not all. They also propose that, if every inch of America’s 25,000 miles of roadway were replaced with their idea-turned-fact, America would make three times as much energy as it used back in 2006. One 4-lane wide stretch of Solar Highway would theoretically make enough energy to power 500 homes. There would be no need for power plants, transformers, power lines, etc. The energy would flow where it was needed, straight from street to home. Furthermore, heating elements would keep the roadways clear of snow and ice, eliminating the need for plowing services and pothole fixes.

The prototypes will be made in three levels. The bottom layer contains the electronics and data needed to make the system work. On top of that are the solar cells LEDs, and sensors that detect any road hazards ahead. The top level is going to be made from something clear, likely bulletproof glass. But wait a second, how are you going to make a smooth clear surface that has the same traction as asphalt, and can put up with constant heavy loads from trucks and traffic?

Another property that concerns me is that complicated roadway will have a supposed lifetime of 21 years, three times more than asphalt. Technology moves fast, but this sounds a little too good to be true. Did I mention it is supposed to cost just $48 per-square foot as well?

Take a look at the Numbers section of their website. At the very least, they make a good argument for their prototype, and I wish them best of luck. Just don’t turn my streets into hockey rinks.

It seems the canvass of clean and green energy is getting bigger with each passing day. More and more products, vehicles, gadgets, homes and cities are being added to this ever expanding canvass. Germany’s Hamburg Harbor has announced the development of a world class Eco City. This eco city will be designed by Tec Architecture and the global engineering group ARUP. This city will encompass many industries and entrainment facilities.

The eco city will have the latest advancements in green design at its disposal. The developers and designers of this ambitious city want to set some standard that’s why they are seeking to achieve the highest level of environmental certification from LEED, BREEAM and DGNB. Eco City is one of the only projects in the world that is aspiring to accomplish the highest level of environmental certification from all three major green building rating systems. The project will assimilate efficient technology and building methods and at the same time nurturing social interaction and community resurrection.

This eco city will have 10 eco-friendly buildings. The eco city developers will use green materials, efficient facades and passive design techniques so that they can lower the energy consumption by as much as 30%.

The Eco City will use an alternative-energy mix for power generation. They will depend on wind turbines to meet the 10% of the power needs of the city. They will utilize solar power for hot water and lights. The vast majority of roofs and terraces will be covered with plants and flowers, making it pleasant for walking, recreation and open space for discussion. This greenery will keep a check on water runoff and make the interior cool. The developers will complete this Eco City in three phases. They will also rehabilitate the existing buildings with used materials. Eco City will cater to the environmental needs. It will not possess an exploitative nature and co-exist in sync with nature.

Tec Principal Sebastian Knorr shares his enthusiasm about the project: “Eco City represents a synergistic approach to urban development. It seems the canvass of clean and green energy is getting bigger with each passing day. More and more products, vehicles, gadgets, homes and cities are being added to this ever expanding canvass. Germany’s Hamburg Harbor has announced the development of a world class Eco City. This eco city will be designed by Tec Architecture and the global engineering group ARUP. This city will encompass many industries and entrainment facilities.

The eco city will have the latest advancements in green design at its disposal. The developers and designers of this ambitious city want to set some standard that’s why they are seeking to achieve the highest level of environmental certification from LEED, BREEAM and DGNB. Eco City is one of the only projects in the world that is aspiring to accomplish the highest level of environmental certification from all three major green building rating systems. The project will assimilate efficient technology and building methods and at the same time nurturing social interaction and community resurrection.

This eco city will have 10 eco-friendly buildings. The eco city developers will use green materials, efficient facades and passive design techniques so that they can lower the energy consumption by as much as 30%.

The Eco City will use an alternative-energy mix for power generation. They will depend on wind turbines to meet the 10% of the power needs of the city. They will utilize solar power for hot water and lights. The vast majority of roofs and terraces will be covered with plants and flowers, making it pleasant for walking, recreation and open space for discussion. This greenery will keep a check on water runoff and make the interior cool. The developers will complete this Eco City in three phases. They will also rehabilitate the existing buildings with used materials. Eco City will cater to the environmental needs. It will not possess an exploitative nature and co-exist in sync with nature.

Nagano Japan Radio Co Ltd said that when the transmission distance was 40cm, the efficiency was 95per cent, and the company hopes to increase the output from tens of watts to several kilowatts.

The true test now will be to reduce the size of the equipment.

The plug could be banished to the dustbin after the demonstration of a new wireless power supply which could charge a device from a metre away.

Japanese scientists say the device could charge anything from a mobile phone to an electric car.

Contactless power supply systems have been used before – anyone with an electric toothbrush may notice there is no electrical contact between the brush and the charger.

But transmissions outside the laboratory have so far been limited to very low-powered devices, with a distance measured in millimetres rather than centimetres.

The charger and the device also need to lined up perfectly.

However the new system consists of sending and receiving coils which don’t rely on exact positioning. Instead, the sender and receiver can detect each other, and the sender can rotate to ensure the correct configuration.

Nagano Japan Radio Co Ltd said that when the transmission distance was 40cm, the efficiency was 95per cent, and the company hopes to increase the output from tens of watts to several kilowatts.

The true test now will be to reduce the size of the equipment.
