Designed by C. F. Møller Architects in cooperation with Moe & Brødsgaard, Cenergia, Phillips, Schüco, Erik Juul and Vogt landscape, the Housing+ is a passive housing that supports on-site renewable energy generation. Located around Aalborg waterfront in Denmark, the pilot-project features a long sloping elevation, which provides a plane for a 1200 m2 solar array to produce the 104.400 kwh of electricity (annually) to power 60 housing units without external resources. The sustainable housing uses the fjord to power heat pumps, while a highly insulated water-tank (W 3 x H 12 m) is integrated to store the solar energy. Apart from solar array and heat pump, the housing project also integrates 4 vertical low-noise wind turbines that generate energy to recharge electric cars. Moreover, the slope shelters a public gazebo and cafe for community gatherings.

Drawing inspiration from a catamaran that symbolizes speed, pureness, energy, travel and passion, the futuristic vehicle runs on solar energy produced by solar panels located on the roof. As manufacturers of consumer digital cameras compete in increments, adding one or two megapixels to their latest models, David Brady of Duke University is thinking much bigger. Working with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, he is designing and building a camera that could achieve resolutions 1,000 or even 1 million times greater than the technology on the market today

The goal of reaching giga- or terapixels, says Brady, is currently being held back by the difficulty of designing a spherical lens that will not distort small areas of a scene. His idea is not only to modify the shape of the camera lens — making it aspherical — but to link together thousands of microcameras behind the main lens. Each of these cameras would have its own lens optimized for a small portion of the field of view.

“Now, when you use a camera, you’re looking through a narrow soda straw,” says Brady. “These new cameras will be able to capture the full view of human vision.”

The final result of the three-year project should be a device about the size of a breadbox, though Brady hopes to scale the technology down to create a single-lens reflex camera with a resolution of 50 gigapixels.

The finalist of the Roca Jumpthegap contest announced during 100% Design London, the “Box” from Valencia-based studio Yonoh is a modular bathroom system designed for architectural construction and interior spaces. The modular bathroom system has three different parts: first one including a watercloset and wash-basin, second containing the shower, a small seat and two shelves with towel racks, and the last section includes extra storage space and serves as an expansion piece to enlarge the bathroom. All the parts unite to make a cohesive bathroom unit that the users can alter according to their needs. Featuring electric controls, the faucets inform about the temperature and quantity of the water consumed by the user. The water used by the shower and the wash-basin stores in the gray water tank to be used to flush the toilet, reducing the water consumption in the bathroom.

The WB-1010 aircraft from designer Reindy Allendra is an entry to the KLM Indonesia aircraft design competition. Looking 85 years into the future, the concept aims to solve the transportation needs for a world with a crowded population. The concept was designed on the belief that while materials and technology for aircrafts will be a lot better and more advanced in the future, the design and flight principles will not be altered drastically. That is, the future aircraft will be similar in design to present day aircrafts, only a lot faster and with better technology.

Going by the current trends in population growth, it can be expected that the world will be a crowded place in the next 85 years. Major air routes will have an extremely high volume of traffic, and will thus need larger, more comfortable, and still have to maintain compactness in its structure.

The WB-1010 will be able to seat more than 1500 people, and be able to reach a speed of nearly 1000 kmph. This giant plane’s body will be made of a material similar to GLARE used in the Airbus A380, with Helium injected inside the body to make the airplane lighter, all windows on the other hand, will be made of “smart glass.” Though the aircraft will be able to harvest wind energy, it will mainly rely on conventional fuel as the main energy source. A robotic extractable stand at the plane’s belly will help the plane during landing, and working in conjunction with a super jet, the WB-1010 will be able to land vertically, without the requirement of a runway.
