A Way to Harvest Electricity from Trees

One freezing day in February 2006, physicist Andreas Mershin huddled with others around a tree on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus to watch an unlikely demonstration. An engineering company claimed it could produce electricity simply by wiring a nail in the tree’s trunk to a metal rod in the ground. Sure enough, the demo worked—but nobody knew exactly why.

It seems the canvass of clean and green energy is getting bigger with each passing day. More and more products, vehicles, gadgets, homes and cities are being added to this ever expanding canvass. Germany’s Hamburg Harbor has announced the development of a world class Eco City. This eco city will be designed by Tec Architecture and the global engineering group ARUP. This city will encompass many industries and entrainment facilities.

The eco city will have the latest advancements in green design at its disposal. The developers and designers of this ambitious city want to set some standard that’s why they are seeking to achieve the highest level of environmental certification from LEED, BREEAM and DGNB. Eco City is one of the only projects in the world that is aspiring to accomplish the highest level of environmental certification from all three major green building rating systems. The project will assimilate efficient technology and building methods and at the same time nurturing social interaction and community resurrection.

This eco city will have 10 eco-friendly buildings. The eco city developers will use green materials, efficient facades and passive design techniques so that they can lower the energy consumption by as much as 30%.

The Eco City will use an alternative-energy mix for power generation. They will depend on wind turbines to meet the 10% of the power needs of the city. They will utilize solar power for hot water and lights. The vast majority of roofs and terraces will be covered with plants and flowers, making it pleasant for walking, recreation and open space for discussion. This greenery will keep a check on water runoff and make the interior cool. The developers will complete this Eco City in three phases. They will also rehabilitate the existing buildings with used materials. Eco City will cater to the environmental needs. It will not possess an exploitative nature and co-exist in sync with nature.

Tec Principal Sebastian Knorr shares his enthusiasm about the project: “Eco City represents a synergistic approach to urban development. By working in close cooperation with all the stakeholders and taking into consideration the immediate environmental context of the project, we’ve created a different type of sustainable, creative-industrial complex. We hope that iconic Eco City project becomes a model for sustainable urban development.”

Hamburg-Harburg Harbor has a history of German entrepreneurship and inventiveness, and the community anticipates Eco City to be a major contributor in its efforts towards renaissance.

A driverless taxi has been unveiled which could make traffic jams, petrol fumes and crowded buses a thing of the past.

The futuristic pod has no driver, and no opinionated chatter to accompany your journey, but instead a button set in the wall with the word ‘start’ written beside it.

Professor Martin LowsonProfessor Martin Lowson, the inventor, seated inside

The four-seater cab was unveiled at the in yesterday and will be in use from next year taking passengers between car parks and Terminal 5.

The man behind the mission, Professor Martin Lowson, who has a background in space travel and worked on the Saturn V Rocket, said: ‘They could have the same effect on transport this century as the rocket had on the 19th.’

He added: ‘We believe that our PRT system can transform cities in the 21st century to provide the optimum form of environmentally friendly urban transport, relieving congestion and reducing emissions.’

The bubble-shaped taxis are battery-powered and passengers select their destination from a touch screen.

They can reach speeds of up to 25mph and would travel along their own narrow road system.

Once the destination has been chosen, the control system logs the request and sends a message to the vehicle, which then follows an electronic pathway.

During the journey, a passenger can press a button to speak to the controller if necessary.

Prof Lowson has been working on the taxis with Bristol-based Advanced Transport Systems since 1995.

A test run of how the cabs could work takes place in Birmingham

At Heathrow, 18 vehicles have been bought to transport passengers and their luggage from the Terminal 5 Business Car Park to the terminal, which will take between three and four minutes.

About 500,000 passengers are expected to use the Heathrow PRT system each year.

Bath and Daventry councils are considering ordering the cabs, and ATS has already received enquiries from , the and .

A driverless taxi has been unveiled which could make traffic jams, petrol fumes and crowded buses a thing of the past.

The futuristic pod has no driver, and no opinionated chatter to accompany your journey, but instead a button set in the wall with the word ‘start’ written beside it.

Vehicle

The British-designed personal rapid transport (PRT) system is a four-passenger vehicle which is being rolled out next year at Heathrow Terminal 5

A British-designed personal rapid transport (PRT) system, a four-passenger vehicle capable of speeds of up to 25mph, driverless car which is on display at the Science Museum, London.

Influential: Craig Venter claims we will make artificial life this year. Scientists are only months away from  creating artificial life, it was claimed yesterday. Dr Craig Venter – one of the world’s most famous and controversial biologists – said his U.S. researchers have overcome one of the last big hurdles to making a synthetic organism.

The first artificial lifeform is likely to be a simple man-made bacterium that proves that the technology can work.

Craig VenterBut it will be followed by more complex bacteria that turn coal into cleaner natural gas, or algae that can soak up carbon dioxide and convert it into fuels.

They could also be used to create new vaccines and antibiotics.

The prediction came after a breakthrough by the J Craig Venter Institute in Maryland.

Researchers successfully transferred
the DNA of one type of bacteria into a yeast cell, modified it and then transferred it into another bacterial cell.

The pioneering ‘gene swap’ was performed on a simple species of bacteria called Mycoplasma mycoides.

Carole Lartigue and colleagues removed the bacteria’s entire genome and inserted it into the yeast – an organism that is distant from bacteria on the tree of life.

Yeast is easier to manipulate in the lab and this process allowed the team to alter the genes – in this case, deleting one gene not necessary for bacteria to live.

Toxic wasteHigh hopes: Synthetic microbes could clean up toxic waste

The cell went on to divide normally, producing a new healthy strain of the modified bacteria.

In January, the team created the entire genetic code of a new bacterium. They now hope to transfer such artificial DNA into a host cell to create a new species, the journal Science reported.

Yesterday Dr Venter said: ‘Assuming we don’t make any errors, I think it should work and we should have the first synthetic species by the end of the year.’

The team successfully transplanted the genome of one bacteria into another for the first time in 2007.

They then created the first entirely man-made genome. But previous attempts to introduce the synthetic genome into another organism and take control of the new bacteria all failed.

Now the team has harnessed a biological process called methylation – where special molecules are added onto the cell’s DNA – to protect them from viruses.

Writing in Science, they said their method might be used to tinker with the genetics of a range of bacteria that have been difficult to engineer.

‘Many medically or industrially important microbes are difficult to manipulate genetically,’ they wrote.

‘This has severely limited our understanding of pathogenesis and our ability to exploit the knowledge of microbial biology on a practical level.

Gene switch experiments Breakthrough: New DNA was protected by a process called methylation (step 5)

‘We hope that the cycle presented here can be applied to other species, to help solve these problems.’

Ms Lartigue, who is now at the Biotechnology Industry Organisation, said there may have already identified a direct application in the development of animal vaccines.

The Mycoplasma mycoides bacterium they used causes a disease called pleuropneumonia in cattle and goats.

‘There is an urgent need for vaccines,’ they wrote. ‘This technology could accelerate the construction of live vaccine strains.’

Dr Venter, named as an author in the paper and who founded the institute, is working to make genetically manipulated or completely synthetic organisms.

Last month, Exxon Mobil Corp signed a $600million (£362million) deal with Dr Venter’s privately held Synthetic Genomics Inc to work on making biofuel from algae.

Venter has said he hopes to manipulate organisms to produce biofuels, clean up toxic waste and sequester carbon to slow global warming.

Researchers already regularly engineer life forms by adding or deleting genes.

The plug could be banished to the dustbin after the demonstration of a new wireless power supply which could charge a device from a metre away.

Japanese scientists say the device could charge anything from a mobile phone to an electric car.

Contactless power supply systems have been used before – anyone with an electric toothbrush may notice there is no electrical contact between the brush and the charger.

Proof of concept: The wireless transmitter lights a lightbulb from a metre awayProof of concept: The wireless transmitter lights a lightbulb from a metre away

But transmissions outside the laboratory have so far been limited to very low-powered devices, with a distance measured in millimetres rather than centimetres.

The charger and the device also need to lined up perfectly.

However the new system consists of sending and receiving coils which don’t rely on exact positioning. Instead, the sender and receiver can detect each other, and the sender can rotate to ensure the correct configuration.

Nagano Japan Radio Co Ltd said that when the transmission distance was 40cm, the efficiency was 95per cent, and the company hopes to increase the output from tens of watts to several kilowatts.

The true test now will be to reduce the size of the equipment.

Forests of artificial ‘trees’ should be planted across Britain to soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, according to a report into climate change.

Engineers claim 100,000 of the devices  -  which would be two-thirds as tall as a wind turbine  -  would remove the carbon emissions of every car, lorry and bus in Britain.

The call comes in a study by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers into how technology could prevent climate change. It says using technology to remove CO2 from the atmosphere could buy the world vital time.

The future? The artificial trees pictured next to the giant wind turbines would help soak up carbon dioxide The future? The artificial trees pictured in between the giant wind turbines would help soak up carbon dioxide

The institution says a single synthetic tree costing £15,000 could capture ten tons of carbon dioxide from the air every day, making it thousands of times more efficient at absorbing CO2 than a real tree.

The trees would be coated with synthetic materials that absorb CO2, which would then be removed and stored underground in depleted oil and natural gas reservoirs. The institution wants millions of pounds to be invested in research on technology to beat the threat of global warming to Britain.

The study also calls for buildings to be lined with pots of algae that absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. The algae could then be used as green biofuels for cars.

Painting buildings white can also help reduce the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the Earth, keeping it cool.

The report says attempts to prevent global temperatures rising are doomed, predicting they could increase as much as 6c by 2100, creating food and water shortages, sea level rises and massive refugee crises.

Author Dr Tim Fox said: ‘Geo-engineering may give us those extra few years of transition to a low- carbon world and prevent any one of the future climatechange scenarios we all fear.’

Researchers are adapting the same methods used in fusion-energy research to create extremely thin plasma beams for a new class of “nanolithography” required to make future computer chips.

Current technology uses ultraviolet light to create the fine features in computer chips in a process called photolithography, which involves projecting the image of a mask onto a light-sensitive material, then chemically etching the resulting pattern.

New nanolithography will be needed to continue advances in computer technology and to extend Moore’s law, an unofficial rule stating that the number of transistors on integrated circuits, or chips, doubles about every 18 months.

“We can’t make devices much smaller using conventional lithography, so we have to find ways of creating beams having more narrow wavelengths,” said Ahmed Hassanein, the Paul L. Wattelet Professor of Nuclear Engineering and head of Purdue’s School of Nuclear Engineering.

The new plasma-based lithography under development generates “extreme ultraviolet” light having a wavelength of 13.5 nanometers, less than one-tenth the size of current lithography, Hassanein said.

Nuclear engineers and scientists at Purdue and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory are working to improve the efficiency of two techniques for producing the plasma: One approach uses a laser and the other “discharge-produced” method uses an electric current.

“In either case, only about 1 to 2 percent of the energy spent is converted into plasma,” Hassanein said. “That conversion efficiency means you’d need greater than 100 kilowatts of power for this lithography, which poses all sorts of engineering problems. We are involved in optimizing conversion efficiency – reducing the energy requirements – and solving various design problems for the next-generation lithography.”

Findings are detailed in a research paper scheduled to appear in the October-December 2009 issue of the Journal of Micro/Nanolithography, MEMS, and MOEMS. The paper was written by Hassanein, senior research scientist Valeryi Sizyuk, computer analyst Tatyana Sizyuk, and research assistant professor Sivanandan Harilal, all in the School of Nuclear Engineering.

Critical to the research is a computer simulation, called HEIGHTS — for high-energy interaction with general heterogeneous target systems — developed by Hassanein’s team. Computations for a single HEIGHTS simulation using Argonne supercomputers can take several months to finish, said Hassanein, a former Argonne senior scientist who led work there to develop HEIGHTS.

The laser method creates plasma by heating xenon, tin or lithium. The plasma produces high-energy packets of light, called photons, of extreme ultraviolet light.

Plasma is a partially ionized gaslike material that conducts electricity. Because of this electrical conductivity, researchers are able to use magnetic fields to shape and control plasmas, forming beams, filaments and other structures. In experimental fusion reactors, magnetic fields are used to keep plasma-based nuclear fuel from touching the metal walls of the containment vessel, enabling the plasma to be heated to the extreme temperatures required to maintain fusion reactions.

HEIGHTS simulates the entire process of the plasma evolution: the laser interacting with the target, and the target evaporating, ionizing and turning into a plasma. The simulation also shows what happens when the magnetic forces “pinch” the plasma cloud into a smaller diameter spot needed to generate the photons.

Findings in the paper detail the laser-produced plasma beams, showing that simulations match data from laboratory experiments recently built at Purdue, Hassanein said.

“It was very exciting to see this match because it means we are on the right track,” Hassanein said. “The computer simulations tell us how to optimize the entire system and where to go next with the experiments to verify that.”

One design challenge stems from the fact that lenses absorb the photons that make up light, meaning they cannot be used to focus the beam. Instead, mirrors are used in the design. However, plasma condenses on the mirrors, reducing their reflectivity and limiting the efficiency of the process.

“We are trying to help find innovative ways of producing these photons, optimizing the production and mitigating the effects of the plasma on the mirrors,” Hassanein said. “So we are trying to improve the entire system.”

The simulation tool combines computations in plasma physics, radiation transport, atomic physics, plasma-material interactions and magnetohydrodynamics, or what happens when a target is heated, melts and turns into a plasma.

The work is based at the Center for Materials Under Extreme Environments at Purdue. Previous support came from Intel Corp and Sematech, an industry consortium formed to advance computer technology.

European researchers have developed new control systems that let driverless vehicles communicate and cooperate with each other. Could fleets of high throughput rapid transit systems soon be cruising our cities?

Many metro and tram systems effectively run automatically nowadays. Still, it is reassuring to see the driver in the cab, knowing someone is there to take over in an emergency or to override the computer’s controls if necessary. But European researchers in the CyberCars2 project (http://www-c.inria.fr/cybercars2) have now demonstrated that vehicles can be left to themselves much more. If allowed to ‘talk’ to each other, automated vehicles can organise themselves well enough to get around efficiently and safely.

Two earlier EU-funded projects, CyberCars and CyberMove, developed the sense and control systems by which unmanned road-based vehicles, called cybercars, could safely navigate the streets.

Now the follow-on CyberCars2 project, has added a communication layer to the system and data analysis software so that vehicles can exchange data and coordinate their movements.

These results from this latest project will drive forward the development of high-throughput, efficient automated transportation systems (as opposed to single vehicles) that could be deployed in traffic-free zones.

Coming through!

A number of the consortium’s partners have been involved in basic research to develop the rules by which the flow of traffic is governed. What happens, for instance, when two automated vehicles arrive at an intersection at the same time? Who takes priority and who decides to go first? Should a car stop at the junction and give way, or just slow down until the other car has passed, then speed up again?

The early days of the project saw researchers creating software to simulate all the possible manoeuvres and scenarios that a fleet of automated vehicles might encounter. The scientists then used the simulator to explore a wide range of situations. They looked at the behaviour of vehicles and tested different rules and prioritisation strategies that vehicles could follow to negotiate complicated situations.

The simulator software allowed the researchers to test millions of negotiations and draw up mathematical rules, known as algorithms, that would control how the cybercars negotiated and navigated junctions, traffic lights, merges and emergency situations in utmost safety.

The project also developed new techniques to handle the enormous volume of data that cybercars might have available to analyse – imagine how much information would fill the airwaves at a city centre terminus where a hundred automated vehicles might be moving around in close proximity.

The researchers adopted a technique called data mining, which uses complex mathematical analyses of data to find patterns and trends. In a typical data search you have to know what you are looking for, then a computer can rapidly churn through the data to find what you want. For example, it might reveal that vehicles are always late when it rains on Mondays and Fridays, but not mid week – something that you would probably never have thought to look for.

The CyberCars2 data mining allows the cybercar control systems to cope with the enormous volume of transient data and identify which elements are the most important or critical to its safe manoeuvring.

Close cooperation

One of the biggest breakthroughs in CyberCars2 is the replacement of the traditional “block system” to control traffic flows with techniques that let vehicles follow each other at extremely close quarters.

“The software developed by the predecessor CyberCars project was for moving vehicles independently at fairly large distances,” explains Michel Parent of INRIA, coordinator of CyberCars2. “We used the same block system as railways, where a vehicle cannot proceed until the one in front has cleared a section.

“But block technology only allows a low throughput. The communication and decision-making modules we have developed help to increase the efficiency of an automated service through coordination which will adjust the speed of vehicles as they approach junctions so they can cross without having to stop.”

If the stunt-like four-way crossings don’t impress you (which they might not at the current speeds of about 5km/h), then perhaps the “platooning capabilities” of the CyberCars2 test vehicles might at least raise an eyebrow.

Platooning lets cars drive close behind one another, almost as if they are coupled together. As they are communicating and cooperating with each other, if the car at the front has to stop, the one behind also applies its brakes in an instant. Safe stopping distances for cooperative cybercars could be less than a metre, depending on the speed.

The CyberCars2 research has developed real-time controls that bring the distance between vehicles down to 0.3 seconds. Imagine travelling at 40km/h, but only 3m behind the vehicle in front!

“This is an order of magnitude better than what exists for existing automated systems,” says Parent, who remarks that the automated transit system being installed at Heathrow Airport has a spacing of six seconds.

Safety first

But could you trust a ride in such a dare-devil machine? Safety is evidently the ultimate limiting factor to the uptake of automated transport systems, and these cybercars are developed with safety first. For example, the software is designed to handle a loss in communication between vehicles. If the communication network breaks down, the vehicles revert to “line of sight” procedures; they will not cross intersections, for example, unless they visually detect that the coast is clear.

Indeed, the first applications of CyberCars2 technology could well be found in somewhat normal looking cars. Part of the CyberCars2 project involved the building of several “dual-mode” vehicles that could be switched between fully automatic and manual driver modes.

But while a car is under manual operation, the automated systems continue to work, providing the driver with useful information about the road and other vehicles in the vicinity. The Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are being developed in a number of EU-funded projects and manufacturers have started to install them in cars.

Meanwhile, the CyberCars2 project continues to push cooperative, automated transport systems as the answer to many of the transport issues facing European cities, especially through the EU-funded CityNETMobil project which will explore the possibilities for such systems in five demonstration cities.

“All the basics are there for a functioning, efficient and safe system,” Parent asserts.

Two years later, Mershin and MIT undergraduate Christopher Love have not only figured out the source of the tree’s electricity, they’ve joined a new company—Voltree Power—that wants to use that energy to power wireless networks of environmental sensors.

As reported in PLoS ONE, the electricity stems from an acidity difference between trees and soil. The area that is more acidic contains a higher concentration of positively charged hydrogen ions. Those ions attract electrons, generating a tiny current that travels between the tree and the ground.

Using a device that extends probes underground, Voltree’s invention harvests the energy and uses it to continuously recharge a battery, which in turn powers radio-equipped sensors. Voltree is now working to assemble a wildfire alert network that can feed sensor data to a central location. The devices could also monitor climate conditions or even detect illegal radioactive materials at the border.

While other monitoring tools have been hampered by the need for costly solar panels or frequent battery replacements, tree-powered sensors could be deployed over vast areas with little maintenance. And not to worry, Mershin says: the amount of energy harvested is so tiny that the trees won’t feel a thing.?

Metamaterials are artificial materials engineered to provide properties which “may not be readily available in nature”.These materials usually gain their properties from structure rather than composition, using the inclusion of microscopic inhomogeneities to enact effective macroscopic behavior.

The primary areaof research in metamaterials is investigation of materials with a negative refractive index. This appears to permit the creation of ‘superlenses’ which can have a spatial resolution below that of the wavelength, and a form of ‘invisibility’ has been demonstrated at least over a narrow wave band. Although the first metamaterials were electromagnetic,  acoustic and seismic metamaterials are also areas of active research.

Metamaterial potential applications are diverse and include remote aerospace applications, sensor detection and infrastructure monitoring, smart solar power management, public safety, radomes, high-frequency battlefield communication and lenses for high-gain antennas, improving ultrasonic sensors and even shielding structures from earthquakes.

Some applications :

Super Cellphones

Super Cellphones

Rayspan Corp. of San Diego is using metamaterials to make stronger, smaller antennas. Although they measure just a few millimeters long and are as flat as paper, the new multiband antennas could double the range, reliability and battery life of cellular phones, Wi-Fi routers and wireless modems.

Availability: Already for sale, but the quality is expected to steadily improve over the next five years.

Everyday WMD Detectors

Everyday WMD Detectors

Army researchers are using metamaterials to build biological- and chemical-agent detectors. Metallic nanostructures react electromagnetically to incoming molecules, revealing their identities through a variety of repsonses. This method can detect single molecules, which could be of great use for passenger or cargo screening.

Availability: Possibly as little as five years for a working prototype.

Tools for the Silent Service

Tools for the Silent Service

Sound has a larger wavelength than light, so it’s easier to build meta-materials to manipulate it. An Office of Naval Research program is funding a prototype that bends sound around a submarine to make it invisible to enemy sonar. Civilian spinoffs could produce total soundproofing and rooms with perfect acoustics. It will alsow apply on aircrafts

Availability: Five years to demonstrate acoustic cloaking in the lab; 10 years to the field.

Viewers of the Unseen

Viewers of the Unseen

Microscope power is restricted by diffraction limit—anything smaller than about half the wavelength of the illuminating light can’t be seen. A University of Michigan team created a lens with metallic resonators that focuses microwaves 10 times more than diffraction limit allows. These lenses could be used to make smaller, faster computer chips.

Availability: Optics could arrive within five years.

Revolutionary Electronics

Revolutionary Electronics

Future circuits may use light rather than electricity, so Army engineers are building a metamaterial switching device, fundamental for building small, fast photonic equipment. The device combines a metamaterial with a semiconductor, so the ability to trap light can be turned on and off. Such photonic computer chips could be 10 times faster than current chips.

Availability: Components within five years; 10-plus years for a product.
