Designed for Renault, the “Zep’lin” by industrial designer Damien Grossemy is a hypothetical vehicle to explore the new range of electric vehicles. Featuring a vertical architecture, the concept vehicle by French designer can change the direction quickly and land anywhere without the need of infrastructure. Generating energy from solar panels located on the top, the Zep’lin can tilt towards the sun, thanks to the ingenious rudder system, for optimum energy generation. Moving like a sailboat, the Zep’lin is a new symbol of eco-commutation. Check out the video after the jump.

One thing many Americans have been loathe to accept is public transportation. Perhaps it is a feeling embodied in the quote attributed to Homer Simpson that “public transportation is for jerks and lesbians.” Or maybe it’s the fact that America is huge and far too spread out to make public transportation viable for many commuters. Yet even so, public transportation remains one of the smartest choices for much of the US, and, with the green revolution must come greater acceptance of it.


And, when you’re talking public transit, buses make up one of the most important parts, but they are gas guzzlers. So naturally, weening these behemoths off of petrol is a high priority for many city governments. Towards this end, China and Sinautec have been testing a fleet of electric buses equipped with ultracapacitors for quick recharging and zero emissions… and so far it works.

Of course, there is a catch.

Seating 41 people, the Sinautec buses are lightweight and fully electric thanks to the ultracapacitors on-board. Even though the charge time is quick (around 5 minutes), the problem with these ultracapacitors is that they need to be constantly recharged, as often as every 3.5 miles (with air conditioning) to 5.5 miles (without a/c). To combat this problem, numerous charging stations are located along the predictable bus routes.

The buses have a maximum speed of 30 mph, and, obviously, with such a short range these first generation buses are severely limited. Yet they spew out 2/3 less emissions than a regular bus—even if the bus gets its electricity from coal power. And surprisingly the bus trips don’t take much longer than a regular bus trip because the quick charging occurs automatically when the bus extends a line from its roof to an overhead charger.

Converting buses worldwide to electricity or other renewable, cleaner fuel sources would be a huge undertaking, but would ultimately benefit a large amount of people. State governments would be less burdened with fuel costs (Sinautec estimates their bus could save $200,000 over a 12-year lifespan) and fewer breakdowns, as electric vehicles have fewer moving parts. This means fares could be cheapened to make public transportation more appealing. I don’t expect to see too many Sinautec buses around me anytime soon, but if they could double the mileage while keeping charging to 5 minutes or less, it might start making even more sense. How many city buses go faster than 30 mph anyway?

Zero Motorcycles has just announced that they are the first electric motorcycle company to meet all US and Canadian safety standards as well as pass EPA certification allowing their bikes to qualify for major federal tax credits of 10% of the purchase price as well as a state sales tax credit.

Considering that the base price of both the 2009 Zero S and DS is $9,950, if you buy one you will now be able to claim a tax credit of $995 when you file. And, if you don’t live in a state that has already had the forethought to suspend the state sales tax for purchase of electric vehicles, you can now also claim whatever state sales tax amount you paid for your Zero bike on your federal tax return.

This is good news for the electric motorcycle nuts out there and it means that soon enough many other electric bike companies will likely also qualify for the same tax credits.

Zero Motorcycles has just announced that they are the first electric motorcycle company to meet all US and Canadian safety standards as well as pass EPA certification allowing their bikes to qualify for major federal tax credits of 10% of the purchase price as well as a state sales tax credit.

Considering that the base price of both the 2009 Zero S and DS is $9,950, if you buy one you will now be able to claim a tax credit of $995 when you file. And, if you don’t live in a state that has already had the forethought to suspend the state sales tax for purchase of electric vehicles, you can now also claim whatever state sales tax amount you paid for your Zero bike on your federal tax return.

This is good news for the electric motorcycle nuts out there and it means that soon enough many other electric bike companies will likely also qualify for the same tax credits.

China just awarded Bombardier Sifang a contract to build 80 “very high speed trains” for the country.

These are super progressive trains that are energy efficient as well as lightning fast. China intends to invest a total of $300 billion in high speed trains by 2020.

China High Speed Rail Investments

According to Bombardier’s press release, the Chinese Ministry of Railways (MOR) hired the company to supply the country with 80 ZEFIRO 380 very high speed trains (1,120 cars). The first train is supposed to be delivered by 2012 and the last in 2014.

China is planning to develop 6,000 km of high speed rail lines (in total) and is looking to have one of the most advanced systems in the world. This is just one step in the process.

New Rail Energy Efficiency

The ZEFIRO 380 trains have a maximum operating speed of 236 mph (380 kph). They use a “highly energy efficient BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion and control system” and Bombardier’s “advanced ECO4 energy saving technologies.” Bombardier released its ECO4 technology last year as part of an attempt to “extend rail’s position as the most sustainable form of transportation in the world.”

Overall energy savings from the new technologies the ZEFIRO trains are using can be as high as 50%.

As Stéphane Rambaud-Measson, Bombardier Transportation Passengers Division President, says, these ZEFIRO trains are a complete package and a key component is their energy efficiency. “ZEFIRO represents a step change in the very high speed rail sector. It’s fast to be sure, but competitive rail service demands more than just speed. It’s about operating efficiency, best-in-class energy consumption per passenger, reliability and rider capacity that exceeds anything else on the rails.”

These trains are expected to hit China in a few years and boost China’s efficiency in a great way. What is the US investing in?

China just awarded Bombardier Sifang a contract to build 80 “very high speed trains” for the country.

These are super progressive trains that are energy efficient as well as lightning fast. China intends to invest a total of $300 billion in high speed trains by 2020.

China High Speed Rail Investments

According to Bombardier’s press release, the Chinese Ministry of Railways (MOR) hired the company to supply the country with 80 ZEFIRO 380 very high speed trains (1,120 cars). The first train is supposed to be delivered by 2012 and the last in 2014.

China is planning to develop 6,000 km of high speed rail lines (in total) and is looking to have one of the most advanced systems in the world. This is just one step in the process.

New Rail Energy Efficiency

The ZEFIRO 380 trains have a maximum operating speed of 236 mph (380 kph). They use a “highly energy efficient BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion and control system” and Bombardier’s “advanced ECO4 energy saving technologies.” Bombardier released its ECO4 technology last year as part of an attempt to “extend rail’s position as the most sustainable form of transportation in the world.”

Overall energy savings from the new technologies the ZEFIRO trains are using can be as high as 50%.

As Stéphane Rambaud-Measson, Bombardier Transportation Passengers Division President, says, these ZEFIRO trains are a complete package and a key component is their energy efficiency. “ZEFIRO represents a step change in the very high speed rail sector. It’s fast to be sure, but competitive rail service demands more than just speed. It’s about operating efficiency, best-in-class energy consumption per passenger, reliability and rider capacity that exceeds anything else on the rails.”

These trains are expected to hit China in a few years and boost China’s efficiency in a great way. What is the US investing in?
